Our History
The spirit of Pathé has been shaped by over a century of innovation and passion for cinema. Founded at the end of the 19th century by Charles and Émile Pathé, the company began with the phonograph before establishing itself as a pioneer of the moving picture. In 1907, Pathé invented the role of the distributor by choosing to rent out its films, thereby laying the foundations of the modern film industry.
Pathé rapidly expanded its activities internationally, notably through an alliance with Edison in the United States, and distinguished itself with numerous technical innovations such as the Pathé-Baby projector in 1922, which brought cinema into the home.
A true visionary, Charles Pathé integrated every aspect of the film business – from camera manufacturing to cinema exhibition – giving the company complete control over the film industry value chain. This ability to adapt and reinvent itself enabled Pathé to endure through the decades while maintaining its position as a leader.
Today, Pathé is one of Europe’s leading studios, producing and distributing films and series for both cinemas and platforms, while remaining the market leader in cinema exhibition in continental Europe thanks to ever more immersive and comfortable venues.
